Hays Rehm was the president of the San Juan Lions Club for the 1963-64 year term.
His home is located at 1493 Yacht Road on waterfront property he and his wife purchased in the late 1940s. It has remained in his family and now belongs to the Rehm grandchildren. The home itself is a modest cabin built mostly by Hays prior to his move to the Island in the early 1950s.
For a time Hays commuted to Cashmere and his job with the Washington State Department of Highways.
During World War II he had worked for the Boeing Company building airplanes and had learned how to use a transit while aligning wings on planes.
During his early years on the Island he worked for Sallee Surveying and did engineering work for the County.
He is best remembered here as a partner in the Rehm and Congdon surveying company.
Sam Buck recalls that his contract price for layout, surveying, setting monuments and dealing with all the various government issues for Cape San Juan was $100 per lot.
His favored dress was a kaki colored shirt and pants with a green woven wool tie and a red and black and Pendleton Jacket.
If you visit the Rehm family cabin at 1493 Yacht Haven Road it remains basically as it was when occupied by Hays and his wife, you will notice a red and black Pendleton Jacket hanging on a peg at the back door, a wonderful reminder for those of us who knew him.
Those who remember him say that other than his family, his two main interests were the Presbyterian Church and the San Juan Lions Club.
Hays Rehm is buried at the Valley Cemetery with a simple stone that reads:
Hays Rehm
1897 – 1973
He loved these Islands
